Drain Cleaning in Cambridge
A drain that keeps clogging is telling you something about the pipe, not the plunger. Clearing it is the easy part. Knowing why it clogged is the useful part.
Drain calls in Cambridge split cleanly by neighbourhood. In Galt's century houses the sanitary drains are cast iron inside and often clay tile outside to the street, and both fail in ways that look like a clog and are not. In the post-war streets of Preston and the mid-century parts of Hespeler the drains are cast iron or early ABS, undersized for the number of bathrooms the house now has, with a kitchen line that has been collecting grease since the 1960s. In the newer subdivisions along the 401 and off Franklin, the drains are ABS and the clogs are the ordinary kind: hair, wipes, a toy, or a builder who left a fitting half-glued.
What we do
- Augering (snaking). A cable with a cutting head, sized to the pipe. The right tool for most sink, tub, toilet and laundry clogs and for the first pass on a main line.
- Hydro-jetting. High-pressure water that scours the inside of the pipe rather than punching a hole through the blockage. The answer for grease-lined kitchen drains and for main lines with years of buildup, as long as the pipe is sound enough to take it.
- Camera inspection. A camera down the line, with a locator that tells us where in the yard the problem is and how deep. This is how a recurring clog becomes a diagnosis.
- Root cutting. Mature trees on Galt and Preston streets find every joint in a clay or cast-iron sewer. Roots get cut, and then you decide whether to keep cutting every couple of years or fix the pipe.
- Clean-out installation. A lot of older Cambridge houses have no accessible clean-out on the main line, which means every service is through a toilet flange or a roof vent. Adding one is a small job that makes every future job cheaper.
Cast iron and clay in Galt and old Hespeler
Cast-iron drain pipe lasts a long time and then fails from the bottom up. The inside surface gets rough as it corrodes, so it catches everything that goes past, and the horizontal runs under the basement floor rust thin along the bottom until there is a channel rather than a pipe. A camera shows this clearly: scaling, a belly where the pipe has sagged in the soil, or a section that is simply gone. Outside the house, the run to the street in the oldest parts of Galt and Hespeler is often vitrified clay tile in short lengths, and every joint is an invitation to a root.
The honest advice on these lines is that cleaning buys time, and the amount of time depends on what the camera shows. A scaled but intact cast-iron main might go years between cleanings. A pipe with a belly will keep clogging at the belly. A collapsed section needs replacing, and that means either digging or lining, both of which are quoted separately once you know what you have.
Kitchen drains and grease
The single most common repeat call in Preston and Hespeler is the kitchen sink. Decades of grease cool and harden on the pipe wall until the bore is a fraction of what it was, and a plunger or a bottle of drain cleaner opens a hole through the middle that closes again in a month. Chemical drain cleaners are hard on old cast iron and on the person who has to open the trap afterwards. Jetting the line clean back to the stack is the fix, and it usually lasts years.
Floor drains, laundry drains and the spring backup
A basement floor drain that backs up in the spring or after a storm, on a low street near the Grand or the Speed, is usually the municipal sewer surcharging rather than a clog in your pipe. Clearing it will not stop it. A backwater valve will, and that is covered under leak repair and pipe replacement rather than drain cleaning. If the floor drain backs up every time the washing machine empties, that is a partial blockage in the main between the laundry tie-in and the street, and that one we can clear.
What the visit looks like
You describe which drains are slow and whether it is one fixture or the whole house. One fixture means a local clog. Everything on the lowest floor means the main. The plumber clears the line, runs the camera if the history suggests something more than a one-off, and shows you what is there. You get a straight answer on whether this is done or whether the pipe has a bigger problem, and a written quote for anything beyond the cleaning before that work starts.
What is not drain cleaning
Septic tanks and septic fields on rural properties toward Ayr are a different service and a different licence. Weeping tile around the foundation is part of the waterproofing system, not the sanitary drain, and a wet basement with dry drains is a waterproofing job. We will say which one you have.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my kitchen drain keep clogging?
Grease. It cools on the pipe wall and builds up over years until the pipe is mostly closed, and a plunger only opens a channel through the middle. In older Preston and Hespeler houses the line is also cast iron with a rough interior that holds onto everything. Jetting the line clean back to the stack, rather than snaking a hole through it, is what stops the cycle.
Should I get a camera inspection?
If the same drain has clogged more than once, or if you are buying an older house in Galt or Hespeler, yes. A one-off clog does not need it. A camera shows scaling, sagging, roots and collapsed sections, and tells you whether cleaning is a fix or a delay.
Is drain cleaner from the hardware store safe?
It is hard on old cast iron, hard on the trap, and hard on the plumber who opens the pipe afterwards. It rarely clears a grease-lined line for long. A plunger and a hand auger are fine for a simple clog; for anything that comes back, have the line cleaned properly.
