Plumber Costs in Cambridge, Ontario (2026)

Planning ranges for plumbing work in Cambridge in 2026, and a straight account of what pushes a plumbing bill up or down. These are planning figures, not a price list. Every job is quoted in writing after the plumber has seen the pipe.

Plumbing bills confuse people because the same symptom can be a small job or a large one. A slow drain is a twenty-minute auger or a collapsed clay sewer. No hot water is a thermocouple or a new heater. Low pressure in Galt is a clogged aerator or a house full of galvanized pipe. So the useful question is not what a plumber costs in Cambridge. It is which version of the job you have, and that is what the first visit settles.

How plumbers charge

Some plumbers charge by the hour plus parts; some quote a flat price per job. Either is fine as long as it is in writing before the work starts. What you want to know up front: whether there is a trip or diagnostic charge, whether it is credited against the job if you go ahead, what the after-hours rate is, and whether parts, disposal and any permit are in the number. The plumber behind this site quotes the job flat once it has been seen, and tells you the diagnostic and after-hours charges on the phone.

Cambridge planning ranges

Planning ranges only — not quotes, not fixed prices. They exclude HST and assume a typical house with reasonable access. Century homes in Galt and Hespeler often land at the top of a range or above it because more is hidden. Your written quote replaces all of this.

What pushes a Cambridge plumbing quote up

The age of the pipe. The single biggest factor. A repair on a galvanized line in Galt often turns into a longer replacement because the next joint fails when the first is disturbed. A toilet swap in a century bathroom often needs a flange rebuilt. The plumber will say when this is likely before starting.

Access. A pipe in an open basement ceiling is cheap to reach. The same pipe behind plaster and tile in a Hespeler bathroom is not. Patching is usually quoted separately and stated as such.

Hard water damage. Scaled heaters, seized valves and plugged fixtures mean more parts fail at once. A heater replacement in a house with no softener often comes with a conversation about adding one.

Gas and venting. A tankless install in a Galt house where the gas line has to be upsized and the vent has to find a way out through stone is a different job from the same unit in a new build off the 401. Gas work is done by a licensed gas technician.

After hours. Evenings and Sundays cost more. If it can wait, we will say so.

Permits and inspection. Stack replacement, backwater valves, moved fixtures and some water heater changes need a plumbing permit through the City of Cambridge. The fee is the city's, not ours, and it is stated in the quote.

What brings a quote down

Calling in the daytime. Most plumbing problems are not emergencies. A slow drain, a drip, a lukewarm heater — booking them at the normal rate is the easiest saving there is.

Working shut-offs. If the main and the fixture stops work, the plumber spends the time on the repair rather than on getting the water off. Replacing dead stops on a normal visit pays for itself the first time you need them.

Doing the related work together. Replacing the stack while the bathroom is open for a renovation, or adding the softener plumbing on the day the heater goes in, costs far less than two separate visits.

A clean-out on the main. Every future drain job is faster and cheaper.

A softener that is set up properly. It extends the life of every fixture and appliance downstream of it.

Rental water heaters and the long-run math

A rented heater looks cheap month to month and is usually not over a decade. Buying out and owning generally works out better for people staying in the house, with the trade-off that repairs are then yours. We will do the arithmetic for your unit honestly, including the buyout figure the rental company gives you, and we do not get paid more either way.

How to compare plumbing quotes

  • Is the price for the job, or for the hour? Either is fine; know which.
  • Is the diagnostic charge credited if you go ahead?
  • Are parts, disposal and permits included?
  • Who is doing the gas work, and are they a licensed gas technician?
  • Is patching of walls, floors or ceilings in or out?
  • Does the plumber hold the Ontario licence, and can they show insurance and WSIB? Ask everyone, including us.
  • Is there a warranty on the work, separate from the manufacturer's on the part?

Plumber is a compulsory trade in Ontario, certified through Skilled Trades Ontario. Plumbing work in homes falls under Ontario's Building Code. Gas appliances are regulated by the TSSA, electrical work by the Electrical Safety Authority, and Consumer Protection Ontario explains your rights on home service contracts, including the cooling-off rules for work sold at your door, which matters for water heater and softener sales in particular.

Frequently asked questions

What does a plumber charge per hour in Cambridge?

Hourly rates vary, and many plumbers quote by the job rather than the hour. What matters more is whether there is a diagnostic charge and whether it is credited against the work, whether parts and permits are included, and what the after-hours rate is. The plumber behind this site states those on the phone and quotes the job flat once it has been seen.

What does it cost to replace a water heater in Cambridge?

As a planning range, a power-vent gas tank, installed with the old one removed, commonly lands somewhere around $2,600 to $4,500 before tax, and a tankless well above that, especially in an older Galt house where the gas line and venting need work. A standard chimney-vented tank is less. None of these are quotes.

What does drain cleaning cost?

A single clogged fixture is usually a couple of hundred dollars or so as a planning figure. A main line auger is more, hydro-jetting more again, and a camera inspection with a locate sits alongside. Houses with no clean-out cost more to service, which is why installing one is worth considering.

How much does it cost to re-pipe a Galt century home?

As a planning range, replacing the galvanized main and risers commonly runs in the low thousands to high single-digit thousands, and a whole-house re-pipe well above that, with patching usually separate. The spread is wide because plaster walls, stone foundations and the number of fixtures all move it. It can be staged.

Do these ranges include HST and permits?

HST is excluded. Permit fees are set by the City of Cambridge and are stated in the quote as a pass-through where the job needs one. The written quote lists exactly what is in and what is out.

Can you give me a price over the phone?

For a straightforward job like a faucet swap or a standard heater replacement, a close planning figure, yes. For anything involving old pipe, drains that keep clogging, or a leak with no obvious source, no, because the things that move the number cannot be seen over the phone. The diagnostic charge is stated before anyone drives out.
